Hemant M. Shah, MD, FACP, FCCP, DSM, CPE
1 September 2023
Dr. Hemant Shah is celebrating his 30 years at Pulmonary Medicine of Dayton this month. Dr. Shah has worked
at the practice since 1993, when PMD was made up of just two physicians, Dr. Shah and Dr. Felipe Rubio.
They practiced across five hospitals and two offices.
As the years went on and more providers joined the practice, PMD's Kettering office became busier.
Currently, PMD is made up of seven physicians (Dr. Shah, Dr. Razi, Dr. Ali, Dr. Desai, Dr. Hajjar,
Dr AlAshram, and Dr. Jain), and four nurse practitioners (Meghan Westover, Bethany Ratliff, Nicole Fiore,
and Lara Rodeffer). Eventually, the practice switched to only two locations: Kettering and Miamisburg
(then known as Sycamore). To Dr. Shah, the greatest challenge of this time was sustaining PMD's reputation
and quality as the practice grew.
Years after, Covid would become a particularly challenging time for Dr. Shah. As a former Chief of Staff
and Medical Director of Kettering's ICU and Respiratory Department, he was selected as the medical director
of Kettering's Covid Critical Care Response team, helping the department navigate the worst of the pandemic.
Dr. Shah, who practices all three of the specialties PMD offers (Pulmonology, Critical Care, and Sleep
Medicine), loves the varied routine he has at PMD. He values treating patients in both the ICU and the PMD
office, emphasizing how patients can "trust [their provider] as a person."
Most meaningful to Dr. Shah, though, is his family. Dr. Shah and his wife, a physician in the Premier Health
system, have three children, ages 33, 31, and 26, and now a grandchild. They have a special needs daughter,
who Dr. Shah describes as having "a special place in [his] heart." He enjoys traveling, particularly to places
where his daughter can join him and his wife.
Outside of medical practice, Dr. Shah is passionate about healthy eating and exercise. Staying active has
been a lifelong pursuit of his: in his earlier days working at PMD, he would leave the office during his
lunch break to go to Taekwondo practice, eventually obtaining a second-degree black belt. He also enjoys
running marathons and other races, having recently completed his fifth Ironman 70.3 triathlon. Pushing
himself and supporting others toward a healthy lifestyle is important to Dr. Shah.
"Everyone should have their own goals," says Dr. Shah, "and to push them just a little bit more." For the
past thirty years, Dr. Shah has sought to exemplify this idea in both his personal and professional life.
